English Lot

Author’s words: Py is Grandma’s kingdom. She was born there and lived there for more than 80 years in this small hamlet of Loubressac (Lot). nOne day she complained that there would be nothing left of her after her death. So we decided to write a little book for the family that would summarize their most loved and popular recipes. But his dishes did not come from nowhere. For some, it was necessary to put them in their context. They were accompanied by stories, characters and sometimes photographs. The faces had names, places, destinies. Gradually, the book took shape. Then family, neighbours, friends wanted a copy. Some found there a missing grandmother, a common era and history… So, finally, we decided to share this portrait by publishing it more widely. nWhy The Bird Window? My grandparents stripped whole bags for my father who transformed the kernels into cakes, pralines, walnut oil for the farmers’ markets in the summer. The most damaged kernels went to the birds. Grandma crushed them with her electric coffee grinder. We have always known this window with birds that came to eat there in winter… At the same time, for several years, I was an artist’s assistant in Paris. One day I learned of his death by telephone. For the communication to pass better, I had opened the window (at the end of November) and I leaned a little to hear better. Grandma was next to me and listened. I was aware at that precise moment that I was at this window, near it, and that Guy was leaving… That’s the bird window… A nourishing, generous window, but it’s also the homage to those who pass by, those who leave and fly away…” nLaure Bex

Transmission, cultural heritage, shared heritage, are often the starting points of the work of l’Echappée Belle. nThese subjects are strongly linked to the favorite territories of Martine Costes-Souyris and Enrico Clarelli. nWe could even say that the memory in the Lot is like the air, the earth, the wine, the bread, the walnut oil, etc… But the state of mind, the emotions, the thought of the world which emanates recipes from Grandma Bex, have nothing solemn, melancholy, commemorative. On the contrary ! These recipes are offered to us with such fertile joy, humor and vitality that they help us to understand what Shakespeare tells us: We are all woven of the same cloth as dreams! »
