Rhone Gard: in Saint-Alexandre, a week dedicated to sustainable development

The City is proposing an unprecedented program for the inauguration of the photovoltaic power station.

This week is dedicated to sustainable development in Saint-Alexandre, culminating in a big day on Saturday May 21 open to everyone. It all started in 2017. A delegation of elected officials from the village went to the congress of mayors with the firm intention of finding environmentally friendly solutions for the energy consumption of municipal buildings.

Solar energy is chosen. Two photovoltaic power stations, one of 600 m² in the form of a shade house, next to the school, and another on the roof of the school establishment, have been installed. “The Reservoir Sun group paid for and carried out the installation of the plants, indicates Didier Massot, elected Alexandrian. It recovers the energy produced by the shade panels. In exchange, the company made the school’s one available. The building has become virtually self-sufficient in energy consumption. This made it possible to scrap the old oil-fired boiler. This allows above all an annual saving of 15,000 to 20,000 € for a zero investment cost for the municipality, apart from the purchase of reversible air conditioning which will be quickly amortized.

A dense program

The two plants have been in operation for a year and a half. The health context prevented the holding of an official inauguration. So the municipal team thought about creating “a broader event on sustainable development to raise awareness of its challenges, to encourage concrete, individual and collective mobilization by emphasizing that we can all be actors in a more sustainable and more united development”.

The first Alexandrian Sustainable Development Week begins this Monday. The municipality has worked hard to create a dense program (it has been working on it for seven months) in which the children of the school have been widely associated. This Monday, May 16, CM1 and CM2 students visited the largest photovoltaic power plant in Europe in Piolenc.

“Encourage concrete, individual and collective mobilization”

Today, they take part in climate workshops and make solar kits. Wednesday, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., everyone is invited to pick up litter in the village (in collaboration with K Net Partage and the parents’ association). On Thursday, schoolchildren will enjoy a vegetarian and organic meal and meet beekeeper Ronald Beaurain.

Friday, inauguration of the book box, made with recycled materials and decorated with passion by schoolchildren: “We painted trees, flowers, a mountain”, explains Inès, a CM2 student. Also on Friday, eco-delegates from George-Ville College will discuss with schoolchildren and lead workshops. The children rehearsed a song for the planet.

Schoolchildren painted the book box inaugurated on Friday.

Saturday, there will be a large market of producers and artisans, concerts, games and lots of workshops. At the same time, a municipal commission is continuing its analyzes for other municipal buildings. “Projects are ready to come out. If the international context slows down and complicates the situation, we are hopeful”concludes Didier Massot.

Organic fair with local producers and workshops with associations

This Saturday, May 21, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., an organic and sustainable development fair will take place in the school car park, with around twenty local exhibitors (producers of spirulina, goat cheese, olives, snails, honey, biscuits, marshmallows and gingerbread, vegetables and charcuterie, wine, bread, fruit juices, craft beer, medicinal and aromatic plants, etc., creators of leather goods, artisanal soaps, everyday objects in fabric…, and food trucks).

The creator of an innovative tea infuser (winner of the Lépine competition) will also be present. For children, the educational farm Les Zanimobiles and wooden games lent by Véné’jeux. The municipality has invited associations committed to the planet who will lead various workshops (“seed bombs”, bike ride with Agissons pour le climat, clown and eco-construction workshop with Bâtir vivant, old initials workshop with a graphic designer, observation workshop of birds with the Gard ornithological center, making objects with recycled materials with Elsa Huet, introduction to tai-chi with Alve coaching, etc.).

At 11.30 a.m., official inauguration of the photovoltaic power plants, at 6.30 p.m., screening of the film Jardin sauvage (free) and from 8.30 p.m., concerts with The ZZ Flop, Nuit blanche, Inky Terra, and DJ Christophe Seghetto (free ).

Friday night’s debate with MP Anthony Cellier is cancelled.
