Derby – In Memory of Lester Piggott (Gr1): Hello Lester, what is your Derby horse?

International / 03.06.2022

Epsom (GB), Saturday

The Platinum Jubilee Derby (Her Majesty the Queen of England will watch it on TV) will be run in memory of Lester Piggott and we want to ask him a very simple question: which horse would he have chosen to win it a tenth time ? Lester won the classic nine times, from 1954 to 1983. His last ride was in 1994 with Khamaseen (Slip Anchor), a boarder of John Dunlop. The colt, by finishing fifth at 33/1, had provided the best value of his career that day… This year, Lester would surely have taken Richard Kingscote to the mount of Desert Crown (Nathaniel).

Desert Crown, fashioned a la Sir Michael

The career of trainers is longer than that of jockeys. This Saturday, Sir Michael Stoute will be 38e starting in the Derbys. The first was Hill’s Yankees (Thatch), in 1978. Since 2016, the season in which he presented Across the Stars (Sea the Stars) and Ulysses (Galileo), he is absent from the big meeting. Sir Michael has won it five times and has presented runners at Epsom for all the top silks: Her Majesty the Queen of England, Her Highness the Aga Khan, the four Maktoum brothers, Prince Abdullah, Lord Weinstock, Robert Sangster, the Niarchos family and even Coolmore, who entrusted him, in 1997, with Entrepreneur (Sadler’s Wells), fourth at the ridiculous odds of 0.66/1 after winning the 2,000 Guineas. Among the owners to have won the Derby with a horse trained by Sir Michael is also Saeed Suhail, who triumphed in 2003 with Kris Kin (Kris S). The Dubai businessman bought Desert Crown for 280,000 Gns (€344,000), his father’s top price, Nathaniel (Galileo), to make it a Derby horse. Mission accomplished, he is the favorite of the Derby and he arrives at the rendezvous with a trip to the Workforce, the last Derby winner of Sir Michael. Two races, namely an easy success at 2 and a comeback (winning in his case) in the Dante Stakes (Gr2). The Derby is a test for an inexperienced colt, but Epsom’s law is very simple: if a talented colt (and Desert Crown is one) adapts, he wins. If he doesn’t adapt, so be it…

Ballydoyle’s Galileo’s Trio

Aidan O’Brien has won the classic eight times and, to equal Lester Piggott, he can count on a team of three foals from Galileo (Sadler’s Wells). Stone Age is the best of them on what he showed us in the Derby Trial (Gr3) in Ireland. He likes to go in front but can also run close to the lead. changingoftheguard also won his trial, the Chester Vase (Gr3), from start to finish and on heavy ground. He will be wearing Australian blinkers. Star of India passed his test in the Dee Stakes (L) and the 2,400m may be the end of the world.

Nations Pride, Captain Godolphin

Presenting three residents at the start is also the formula chosen by Charlie Appleby, who supplemented Nations Pride (Teofilo). The latter has the second best rating of the race (116), he has already won at a similar course (Lingfield) at 2 years old and was very demonstrative during his success by seven lengths in the Newmarket Stakes. He certainly holds 2,000m, but as the Derby is on 2,400… Walk of Stars (Dubawi) opened their record in the second division of the maiden won by Desert Crown. Four weeks ago, at the Lingfield Derby Trial (L), he showed talent but also a bit of character. According to his coach, he learned a lot. The third is Nahanni (Frankel), who worked over the winter in England and earned a free ticket by winning the Blue Riband Trial (L), at Epsom. He also likes to go in front.

Piz Badile and a 23-year-old coach

Two other foals arrive at the Derby after winning a trial. Piz Badile (Ulysses) is the winner of the Ballysax Stakes (Gr3). If successful, it will offer a record to Donnacha O’Brien, who would become at 23 the youngest winning coach of the Derby. His father, Aidan, had won his first with Galileo when he was 32. The student Niarchos is a tough colt and he will have the experience of Lanfranco Dettori on his side. The Juddmonte Westover (Frankel) won his place by winning the Classic Trial (Gr3) at Sandown. He will have to progress a lot. Five candidates are at 66/1 or more. Fans of outsiders can be seduced by the “FR” Royal Patronage (Wootton Bassett), the undefeated West Wind Blows (Teofilo) or even Sonny Liston (Lawman).
