It was in the capital of Gaul that we went to try out the new Toyota Aygo X. An urban SUV that has many surprises in store for us!
Toyota Aygo X
Third generation of Aygo, the little Japanese girl comes back to us raised! At a time when competing manufacturers are deserting the segment, Toyota persists and signs with this spicy Urban SUV. At the start of its history, the Aygo was the result of an alliance between Peugeot (108), Citroën (C1), Toyota (Aygo). Production has always been done in the Czech Republic in Kolin. Since Peugeot and Citroën have thrown in the towel, Toyota has fully bought the factory to continue to produce there, among other things, the new generation of Aygo.
Don’t call it X, but Cross!
Yes, marketing is facetious at Toyota. While the SUV version of the Yaris is called Yaris Cross, the SUV version of the Aygo is called Aygo X. However, it should be called Cross. For non-English speakers, know that the letter X forms a cross and in English, I give you a thousand, it’s a “cross”. The Japanese brand’s Urban SUV saw its first drafts drawn in Sofia Antipolis at the European Design Center, ED2.
Called Aygo X Prologue, the final version is only very close to the concept. It is a vehicle designed in Europe for Europeans. My hometown was in the spotlight and it was therefore in Lyon, the city of light that I was able to discover and take control of this new Toyota Aygo X!
A mini Crossover full of charm
Might as well not make the suspense last longer, this Aygo X won me over. Although the grille of the Prologue concept was not retained, it is clear that the generous shapes of the concept were still maintained. We therefore find ourselves facing a small city car with a generous face, well planted on its 18-inch rims.
The Aygo X measures 3m70, that’s 24cm longer than the previous generation. It also gains 13 cm in width with its 74 meter and its trunk increases to 231 liters or 63 l more than before. Of course who says SUV says higher driving position. She therefore gains 5.5 cm in height and now culminates at 1m51. The Aygo X certainly ticks all the boxes of the Urban Crossover. Its wide fenders and large wheel arches have a lot to do with it.
A spicy range!
For its launch, the Japanese brand offers 4 colors, but not just any. Indeed, each is associated with a spice. Thus, you will be entitled to Cardamom Green which equips the Aygo X Air Limited version. A version with options and which is adorned with a large canvas sunroof, allowing you to contemplate the buildings and monuments of your favorite city.
The Chili Red will give this Aygo X this little “caliente” side in perfect harmony with the two-tone rear. Ginger Beige, rather sober, this color has the advantage of coming out of the eternal colors that we are used to seeing. Finally, the Bleu Genièvre will perfect this spicy trend that we were allowed to discover and taste in the world capital of gastronomy. Yes, I still want to talk to you about Lyon!
Inside, it’s tough.
Although all Toyota fans already know it, the interior of the new Aygo X exudes seriousness. Perfectly mounted, the plastics give a feeling of robustness. The “monocoque” seats are quite enveloping. The seat is high and the field of vision generous. However, be careful of your blind spots! Who says 4 doors, says rear seats. Although the rear seats are comfortable, they would be dishonest to advertise the comfort of a limo. Let’s say that for young children, it is more than enough.
However, if you are a good 80 meters tall, there will be little room left for your passengers. Big crush for the very good quality JBL sound system. A subwoofer is also integrated in place of the spare wheel. Special mention also to the 9-inch touch screen perfectly integrated into the dashboard. This offers you the possibility of using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The Toyota smart Connect also enables wired and wireless connectivity for your smartphone. In addition, your smartphone will be able to interact with your Aygo X via the MyT application. This will allow you to keep an eye on your fuel level, the location of your Toyota and even the analysis of your driving!
On the road
As much to warn you right away, the new Toyota Aygo X is not a thunderbolt! No hybridization of any kind, no turbo, simply “a good old 3-cylinder thermal engine” VTT-i of 72 horsepower. Its displacement of 1.0 l allows it to remain well below the 120 gr CO2 mark with a very good score of 107 gr. Furious, the small engine is voluntary and will not hesitate to go up in the towers when the need arises, especially in the manual version. Of course, its main function is not to climb Mont Ventoux in the GR Yaris way, nor to do a VMax on the Autobahn. Its use is purely and simply urban. Consumption in the WLTP combined cycle is given for 4.9l/100. The new Toyota Aygo X may have a new S-CVT automatic transmission. The “auto” gearbox with converter from Toyota will behave as usual, that is to say that it will be useless to crush the right pedal, everything is done smoothly in the greatest comfort. .
More linear, more reactive, this new transmission will still make your engine noisier than with a good mechanical gearbox. However, you will be able to reduce this feeling via the paddles on the steering wheel. Chassis side, it’s all good. The Toyota Aygo X shares the same platform as its bigger siblings, Yaris and Yaris Cross (TNGA-B). It therefore has all the advantages of the platform, such as exemplary handling and a remarkable turning radius.
For the first time on an A-segment model, the Aygo X has the Toyota Safety Sense package as standard. The Crossover has an adaptive regulator, the pre-collision system, but also a reversing camera which constitutes a universe of safety and driving aids baptized Toyota T-Mate.
Available from €15,990, the two models tested are just over €23,000 for the AIR Limited version and just over €20,000 for the Collection version with manual transmission. While the competition is deserting the city car segment, Toyota proves with its new Aygo X that you can combine business with pleasure. At a time when cities are suffocating under the 30 km/h speed of zealous eco-friendly mayors, the small urban crossover will put a smile on your face.
Between its practicality and its avant-garde line, there is no doubt that the new Aygo X will conquer its target in no time!
