Alcantara II Award (Class 1): Athabascan makes Etreham shine

Races / 17.05.2022

Saint Cloud, Tuesday

In the Price Alcantara II (Class 1), Athabascan (Almanzor) opened his prize list and showed off the colors of his new owner: the Haras d’Étreham… where his father is stationed, Almanzor (Wootton Bassett). The big and handsome colt waited in second position in a race led by a Antharis (Sea the Moon) slightly detached as the peloton moved in single file. On the straight, Athabascan got the better of Antharis’ will before resisting the good end of the race ofIlic (Iffraaj), second to a neckline. Antharis retains third place at a length and a half.

Maybe the lily

Athabascan does not have the physique of a precocious subject. Since its beginnings, the former representative of André Fabre, then of Élisabeth Fabre, has been irreproachable and caught the eye of Nicolas de Chambure, who explained: “I only have positive things to think about this victory. I have followed the colt since his debut because he is a product of Almanzor. He had started very well last year, in Lyon, where he had concluded in a very good action. Then, at Chantilly, he didn’t like the heavy ground at all: his dam is by Dansili. Finally, it had just made a good comeback at Chantilly. We’re thrilled to see it take hold right after we bought it! He is a big and beautiful colt. Almanzor makes horses that progress over time and have a good mind. His physique leads us to think that he must have some leeway. I am happy for Monsieur and Madame Fabre, who raised him. André Fabre will decide on the rest of the program but he had mentioned the Prix du Lys (Gr3) as a possibility, if the colt won well. »

Arapaho’s brother

Athabasca is her third foal and her third winner since the mare also gave Alula Borealis (Kendargent), winner for her debut at Fontainebleau in March when she was 3 years old.
